I intended to write a lovely post about nature as a source of endless inspiration... but over the last 24 hours, nature has managed to upset me quite a bit!
Yesterday, while hanging around the garden, checking on my vegetable patch and looking at the birds and butterflies, hubby and I spotted an injured little blackbird chick, that has seemingly fallen off a nest. Despite knowing that there was very little chance of survival, I set on a rescue mission to save the poor little guy. I researched, made some calls and eventually whisked the injured chick to a nearby veterinary medical centre.
Upon my return, I saw mama bird, with a worm in her beak, hanging around the bay tree, under which I found the chick. I watched her for a few moments, just to realise that she has a well hidden nest with two healthy chicks in there. I was pretty pleased and figured that over all- this was a happy ending to the story.
But nature can be cruel sometimes and this morning I found the nest destroyed and the two remaining chicks lying on the ground at the exact same spot as the first one. Although these two were bigger and healthier, and did not obtain any injuries from the fall, I knew there's not much anyone can do to help them.
I am very grateful for the fact that in the UK, local vets are obligated to take wildlife in, and do their best to help. And seeing that mama and papa bird are still hanging around, guarding their territory makes me hopeful that they might make another attempt at raising a family in our garden.
Either way, here's a round up of art, craft and design- inspired by the view of our garden, that I see from my office window.
